Palm Islands?

I have always wondered why the Palm Islands of Dubai were built or created for that matter. What prompted someone to say, “Hey! I am going to build my own set of islands that are going to extend the shoreline.” I could not find a written answer for that but it seems quite obvious to why they were built because Dubai want to become number one in everything they do.  They have the world’s tallest building and they officially have the world’s first artificial islands. Below are the facts about the Palms:

           1. The Palm Islands have no Palm trees but they are currently being grown in a nursery
           2. The Palm Islands are known as the eighth wonder of the world
           3. They are the only other landmark next to the Berlin Wall that can be seen from space to the naked eye.
           4. Each island required 12 million pounds of rock and 53 million pounds of sand to construct from the ocean floor.
           5.  The islands are not technically islands because they are not connected to the mainland by a bridge
           6.  Only 3 islands are open to visitors
           7. Currently, the Palm has 60 luxury hotels, 4,000 villas, 100 water homes, and 500 shoreline apartments.
           8. The Palm Islands can only been seen in the formation of a Palm Tree either from space from a helicopter and not from the ground. So please do not attempt to walk on the island and see a formation because you will see nothing but sand.
